Fitting Title

With so many genres that offer fantastic novels, variety is so out there. As a avid reader I like to mix it up abit and historical romance is one of those. This is also my first time in reading this author so curious to see if she can hold my attention. Grace is not your average woman especially in that time, she is a midwife and healer. Some would often even call it witchery and nonsense but what they turned to in the form of medicine was torture mostly I think. In the place they are in she has earned a good following and respected for her skill. Her best friend is proof that she knows her stuff. The one who she does butt heads with and likes to rile though is Jonathan who works for her friend's husband. He also has a very sick son that he has come to the end of his choices that pride will be swallowed with him asking her to see him. They are also in the same mind about marriage-not for them, especially with their situations. That is the grand thing about love that it seems to like to bring two together that say nope and turn it around. In this you see how their relationship will take a turn and develop into something that neither saw coming or thought would happen. The spunk and personality of both will shine forth being revealed as you travel along with them. Thanks though to the time and place discretion is going to be needed or lives will be blackened. The banter they have with each other is delightful and at times so humorous too. The eloquence of courtship as much as they can have in their circumstances will fit right to them. The deception though will also cause others to think different especially where Jonathan is concerned and the direction of his future will be meddled in because of lies to cover up reality.The prejudice of the upper class will shine forth making you want to smack someone. As time goes on harder and harder will feelings be to hide and with a event that happens all will come to light in a unexpected way. So do love the line towards the end that includes the title that fits this novel to the tee on the very last page.

Fall in love again!

The Hearts of Honour series continues with a seductive tale of enemies turned into lovers.

Grace, the Hartley herbalist and midwife, and Jonathan, the Blackthorn estate manager, got off to a more than rough start in the first book of the series, Passion & Propriety. Their best friends, Hannah and William, fell in love in the face of adversity. At first, their love hit a nerve with both Grace and Jonathan, but they did find a way to accept it. In Grace's case, she even envied her best friend.

In Duty & Desire, Jonathan is at his wits end, watching his son, Peter, deteriorate day by day. When the last "specialist" drains his accounts, he allows Grace to examine the boy. Over the course of Peter's treatment, Jonathan comes to respect and admire Grace in a way he never thought possible. Grace also sees Jonathan in a new light, as a man who deeply loves his son and is unwaveringly loyal to those he cares for most.

DeSallier gives us an unforgettable romance in impossible circumstances. The intricacy of the plot had me devouring the novel in only a day. I loved how I was pulled into the story and the town of Hartley like I was one of the members of their community. The pacing gave a realistic feel to the story, making me smile and cry right along with the characters.

Always the queen of twists and turns, DeSallier shocked and amazed me with a climax I never saw coming, but completely fell in love with. I cannot wait to devour another of Elise DeSaller's novels as soon as she releases it.

LOVED this Romance!!!

I was so excited to get Grace's story after reading the first book in the series, Passion and Propriety. Grace was a wonderful supporting character there and she's a fabulous main character here. She's strong and it irks her to be just a wee bit jealous of the relationship Hannah and William had in that book. As a bastard daughter and a woman who works for her living with her midwifery skills, she doesn't think she's going to be able find a husband of her own.

Jonathan has been looking for a cure for his young son's illness for years. Unfortunately, the doctors of the time have nearly killed the little guy. He's at his wit's end when he agrees to let Grace examine young Peter. They work together to bring him back to health. And instead of sniping at each other (as they have been for ages) they find an attraction between them that gives us, the reader, a very satisfying case of UST (unresolved sexual tension). Even as Grace tells Jonathan that he needs a more "gently bred" young woman as his wife, the two enter into a secret relationship...and goodness me...is it hot! But it's not "just" sex...no, this is love and it's fabulous.

A great cast of supporting characters add a lovely depth to the story. And some laughs, too. I did love young Peter!

Loved this book, and now I want more from this author. I highly recommend this book to people who want that Regency experience with a side of steam...and love.

A breathlessly appealing, sexually charged romance!

Yes! Yes! YES! Jasinda Wilder returns to the sensational world of her Big Girls series, and the results are ravishing and downright addictive! I loved everything about this book! It's sexy as all get-out! So much passion, so much heated heat! Is that even grammatically correct? Probably not, but who cares!? This book rocked my world! Sorry, there's no vanilla here...move along(; There were moments when I literally began to sweat! Yes, sweat! Not to sound cliche, but I seriously could not put the book down. I started reading it this morning after the kids left for school, and I finished it tonight. There was no stopping, no pause. I had to know, I had to have my next fix. I felt like a juvenile junkie! It wasn't until I began to feel faint that I realized I hadn't moved in hours, forgetting to eat or drink. Now, that's when you know you've scored a delicious masterpiece when it demands your every waking hour. Ahhhh! It's so perfect! Ian's perfect. Nina's perfect. I loved the travel, loved the literature references, loved London! I mean hell, who doesn't love London and British speaking men? Kudos to you Mrs. Wilder for delivering yet another breathlessly appealing, sexually charged romance where women with curves are adoringly appreciated.

5 Big Lovin’ Stars – Hold Onto Those Panties Ladies, Ian Stirling is Here.

“My heart stopped and my mouth went dry. Well, hello Mr. Chunk o’Hunk.”

Nina Herrera is about to set off on the biggest adventure of her life, she’s been accepted to Oxford University, where she’ll be studying for a Master’s Degree in Literature, her passion. Taking a huge leap of faith and leaving her family and friends behind to travel across the world is exciting, thrilling, liberating and terrifying for Nina. Though the move isn’t the only thing terrifying Nina she has a very real and serious fear of flying. After boarding her plane and settling into seat, she’s surprised and delighted when the sexiest man, she's ever laid eyes on, settling into the seat right next to her.

“Don’t look away. Don’t let it get away. Don’t run.”

Ian Stirling is the man that Nina never saw coming. Sliding into his seat, smelling and looking positively divine, Nina is now feeling blessed, flustered, flushed and still terrified of flying. Bonding almost instantly over their mutual fear of flying, these two have that insta-spark, and it’s entertaining as hell to experience. The banter, the flirting, the smirking, and all that sexual tension makes for a very interesting lead into what is now guaranteed to be a very sexy, very enjoyable read. From them debating men wearing Band-Aids, pink Hello Kitty ones to be exact, to their feelings regarding real men carrying umbrellas and using hand lotion, I was snickering from the very start.

“He smiled at me, and if I hadn’t been sitting down, my panties might have fallen off.”

The tangible desire that simmers between Nina and Ian is decedent and so delicious, I had flushed cheeks, and found myself shifting restlessly in my seat more than once. Ian is a take charge, take the leap kind of guy, whereas Nina is a planner, a labeller, obsess about it till it makes her nuts type of girl. Total opposite personality types, but where they are totally in sync, is in their desire and attraction to each other. Nina is shocked and amazed that such a dreamy specimen could be not only interested in her, but pursuing her openly after only having met her hours before. Ian sees a beautiful, funny, intelligent woman that he has a very real desire to spend more time with and of course pleasure her in ways no man has before.

Jasinda Wilder gives us yet another erotic and sexy read, perfectly written with expertly placed humor, layered emotions, and enough drama to keep you hooked from the beginning. Her characters are fabulous, giving us a sexy alpha man to swoon, sigh and pant over, but most important, a strong female character that is not supermodel thin or surgically enhanced. Nina represents most women, real women with curves and insecurities, but also an attitude that says love for me, the way I am or shove off. I loved Nina, I’m not going to lie, I did want to smack her upside her pretty head more than once, but that being said she is real. I understood her struggles, her doubts, her fears.

Ian, oh Ian, Ian, Ian, I fell totally in love with him, from the first moment he smirked at Nina on that plane. Charming as the devil himself, with a naughty mouth and a sexy accent, a body that won't quit and some skills that all men should sit up and take notes on, he’s everything you could ever want in a book boyfriend. Ian's a keeper.

I loved this book from start to finish, I highly recommend picking up, Big Love Abroad, truthfully you can never go wrong with a Jasinda Wilder novel, she never fails to deliver the goods. *wink* *wink*

In Love with Big Love

When Ms. Wilder announced this gem, I was super excited. This book was utter perfection. Sexy. Funny. Realistic. Easy to relate, even easier to fall in love with.

Even if you have not read the previous books in the series, you will not get lost. You will still appreciate the story because the characters are actually separate from what has happened in the past. In a few words, it's the best example of a standalone that was a spin off from an excellent series.

The characters are well developed and I liked that the POV was a consistent flow of what the characters were experiencing. What I loved more? It's a realistic love story. How they meet, how they proceed, and how they get their happy ending is something that could happen in real life. Thank you for such a great love story!

Great graphic novel for the middle grades

I bought Drama so that I could increase the graphic novel section of my 6th grade classroom library. While the GN genre isn't large yet, I was glad to see a book that seemed very relatable to my students.
After reading Drama, I'm glad this book will be in my class library. I'm surprised at parents who are giving the book awful reviews for "hiding an agenda" from people who buy the book. The graphic novel isn't about being gay or sharing gay feelings--it's about being a person--especially a middle schooler who is confused (Callie wonders why she likes a guy who was mean to her, other characters don't know who they like or why--VERY relatable to middle school students!), and the book emphasizes what it means to be accepted for who you are. The main characters in the novel aren't in the "popular" group--they're the theatre kids who enjoy each other's company and realize that being popular isn't all it's cracked up to be. When one male character dresses as a girl and kisses a boy on stage, the crowd responds with a few giggles followed by thunderous applause. We should be so lucky that all of our children are as accepted for whoever they are throughout their lives.
I would hope that the parents who are griping about kissing scenes post similar reviews for any other book--graphic novel or text-based--that have kissing in them. The truth is that no child lives in a bubble, and a book is a great place to start a conversation about love and acceptance.

Is your 3rd grader ready to explore the idea of bi-sexuality? If so, read this book.

There's nothing wrong with homosexuality or bi-sexuality. But if your kid believes in Santa Claus, needs occasional help washing the shampoo out of her hair, has to be told repeatedly to get dressed because it's time for school, likes Shopkins, and has handwriting like a 3rd grader because she IS a 3rd grader, then I'm pretty sure she's not ready to explore the idea of bi-sexuality. Let kids be kids. Jeez. What's the rush? The main girl in this book is BOY CRAZY (hence the heart above her head on the cover art.) She's easily offended when boys won't kiss her. Why won't they kiss her, you ask? Because the boys are gay. They're all gay, or bi-sexual. Why? Because the story takes place in a drama club. (Note to the author: Not all boys who do theatre are gay-- it's pretty cliche to think so.) Though I do really like that gay kids are represented here-- we definitely need to see more diversity in romantic story-lines. This book is perfect for kids 6th grade and up, but it should say precisely that on the cover so parents with younger kids can skip it.
The first two books in this series are intended for kids 8 and up. Along comes the 3rd book. The kids who read the first two want the 3rd-- so mom buys it. You end up with a bunch of 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders reading a book about one girl's obsession with getting a boyfriend, and the gay and bi-sexual boys who thwart her efforts. Scholastic, you blew it. Why not put the *new* age range on the cover? Or better, write an *honest* synopsis on the back so parents get an idea of what their kids will be reading. How are we supposed to know that the 3rd book (in a series initially intended for 8-year-olds) is no longer intended for 8-year-olds?
Childhood is short and getting shorter. Kids get two seconds in life to NOT focus on boy/girl craziness before it completely takes over their lives. Why do we, as adults, insist on robbing them of those two seconds?
If you're looking for good books with plot lines that aren't boyfriend/girlfriend driven, try Katherine Applegate's Crenshaw and The One and Only Ivan. Or Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin-- anything by Grace Lin. The Night Fairy by Laura Amy Schlitz. Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism is great! Woof by Spencer Quinn. The Heidi Heckelbeck series is fun for 2nd and 3rd grade reluctant readers.

Naysayers be gone.

I never would have thought a graphic novel could have so many FEELS let alone one about a middle school musical cast and stage crew. Now, I didn't cry my eyes out or anything, but I did laugh out loud; feel totally confused (for Callie, not because of the story-line); get that super giddy, light-hearted feeling; and even wanted to just give poor Callie a hug.

Drama is short, but Raina Telgemeier packs so much into it. There's new love, confused love, best friends, guy friends, and even some self-discovery. And while the story focuses mainly on Callie you really get a feel for all the other characters and delve into some of the stuff they're going through as well. It's amazing how well a story set over the course of a year can flow when done right. It never really felt rushed either. I had time to process and experiences the emotions so I actually felt sucked into the story rather than a simple passerby.

The Nutshell: The art is awesome. The story is awesome. The characters are awesome. Are we sensing a pattern here? Basically what I'm saying is: Drama is nothing short of awesome and since it's a quick read, what have you got to lose?

After reading the "most helpful negative review" on Amazon I'm appalled. I think it's amazing that Raina tackles such heavy issues for a young audience. The parents in the comments on this review are agreeing with the original reviewer saying this topic is too heavy for the age the book targets and that "sexual issues" are a sensitive subject for parents. I'm sorry, but I don't believe one's orientation is an issue. And I'd also like to point out there is nothing "sexual" in this story. There is kissing for goodness sake and, yeah, seventh graders do that!
This line is probably what gets me the most from the review, though:
"While other reviewers may feel this story line is something kids today face on a daily basis, I disagree. Sure, some kids may deal with it, but it's not the norm."
What. The. Freaking. Heck. It /does/ happen to kids today and I think it's a very important issue to address. The way it's handled in the story is fantastic and I think the world would be a better place if these commenting (and reviewing) parents would raise their children in a similar fashion rather than in a way that makes them uncomfortable to read the story.
I wouldn't be surprised if Drama started ending up on banned books lists. But we all know those are some of the best ones, now don't we?

Zelda and F. Scott Fitzgerald were married on June 1, 1920 in New York City. They first met in 1918 when Scott Fitzgerald was in the United Stated Army, training to go over seas in WWI. While they came from very different backgrounds, both of them had great ambitions, and saw themselves as the creators of a new era, the Jazz Age.

In October 1921, their only child, a girl, Scottie, was born in Scott’s birthplace, St. Paul, MN. The family did not stay there for very long. The Fitzgeralds became one of the most famous couples in America. They lived tabloid lives long before tabloids even existed.

During the first stormy decade of their marriage, Zelda sought to become an artist in her own right. She wrote several short stories, was an excellent amateur painter and a serious student of the ballet.

By 1930, the Fitzgeralds had worn out their Roaring Twenties lifestyle, and were deep in debt and depression. Scott could not complete the novel he would finish four years later, Tender is the Night and Zelda suffered her first major breakdown and was sent to a clinic in Switzerland to recover. She never did.

Until her death, Zelda was a permanent resident at various sanitariums. While she was diagnosed as suffering from a mental breakdown, in 1932, she wrote Save Me the Waltz, her only novel. It was a commercial and critical failure. In 1937, Scott Fitzgerald went to Hollywood in order to earn money to support both Zelda and himself. He failed, and was forced to borrow money from old friends to keep Scottie in private school.

On December 21, 1940, Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack caused by years of alcoholism. He was 44 years old. Zelda was unable to attend his funeral. On March 10, 1948, Zelda died in a fire at Highland Hospital, Asheville, NC. Her remains were found on the top floor of the dormitory where she spent her last years.

They are buried together in the Fitzgerald family plot in Maryland.

Z&S is the story of the dreams that Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald chased over two continents and three decades, and the destruction of their lives in pursuit of those dreams. Concentrating on the relationship that formed the focal point of both their lives, this play explores one of the most legendary romances of all time. While Zelda is often seen as an appendage to Scott's career, this play reveals that Zelda was an artist in her own right, and that her life and dreams were as devastated by Scott's demons as his life and dreams were destroyed by hers. The Fitzgeralds were co-conspirators in making a life that created the idea of the Roaring Twenties. Scott Fitzgerald was the first to create the "flapper" character in his work and there is no doubt that Zelda was his template.

A valuable collection of insight and wisdom from past generations of Americans.

I used to listen to my grandfather tell stories of how life was when he was growing up. The experiences he shared and wisdom he gained by living throughout those days, have stayed with me all my life. In a similar manner, Droughts and Dreams gives the chance to hear the stories of families who lived through The Great Depression in all corners of the country. It is very interesting to read how different regions dealt with the depression in different ways. Also, realizing how important a family's ability to be self-reliant was in how their depression experience affected them was an eye-opener.
It is important to read stories of those who lived through the Depression era as their numbers are ever dwindling and soon their insight and words of wisdom will be gone with them. I encourage folks to read these stories, ask older family members about their own experiences or those of their parents and grandparents as the memories will fade away someday. Stories are a way to preserve the past and continue learning from generations past. Droughts and Dreams is a valuable collection of accounts from the greatest generation who persevered and prevailed one of the darkest times in American history.

This book is hard to put down!
It's a collection of memoirs by people who lived through the Great Depression. Preppers and history buffs alike will enjoy it. You can read it first to last, or skip around reading chapters at random.
These are the stories of how people ingeniously made do with what they had when they had nothing. Some were able to grow their food. Some worked what little work there was to be had.
People went hungry, and lost their homes and businesses. Many led nomadic lifestyles (sometimes via horse and wagon!), because they were looking for something better. But somehow they survived through tragedies and triumphs.
Interspersed throughout the book are photographs of the era, recipes and home remedies.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to get some real life glimpses into that dark time in American history.

Excellent read that gave me a renewed energy to learn more skills!

After reading Droughts and Dreams I have a renewed energy for prepping and learning self sufficient skills. This is a good reminder of why I need to keep on keeping on with what I am doing and to not grow weary. The younger generation would benefit greatly from reading and hearing these stories of what times were really like. In this age of everything being instant and electronic the younger generation has completely lost sight of what it is like to grow and provide their own food. I will be adding this book into my children's reading selection this school year so they can have more understanding for why we do the things we do to learn skills and be debt free.

Tender but rather bleak tale with Spanish flavor.

Matute's subject matter is the coming of age of a young girl during the troublesome times of the Spanish Civil War. The war remains at a distance, percolating by drops into the story through the reactions of the adults who surround Matia and her cousin, Borja. Spanish cultural patterns and insights make for colorful and interesting reading. Matute's style of writing is uniquely different: lonely, stark, and intensely detailed. The story is bizarre at times, almost surrealistic. Camus-like images of the sun and light and glare evoke the excruciating realities of existentialism. Images are strong and not always pleasant. Tender moments are tender indeed, but the undertoe of isolation, cold-hearted authority, and prejudice pulls the reader into a world poignantly desolate, foreign, and ultimately, cruel.

Unique concept and fast-paced read

Omigosh! This book! I was so flipping excited to read it when I saw the synopsis, and I wasn't disappointed!

It's hard to share too much of this story without spoilers, but it comes down to Aster (and her discovery she can reverse a person's fate with the touch of a Tarot card) and Reese (and the fact that he is supposed to die in a few weeks on his eighteenth birthday, thanks to a family curse). When Reese learns of Aster's ability, he tries to get close to her so she will reverse his fate, only to have things get much more complicated than he thought they would be.

I absolutely adored the concept of someone with the ability to change a person's fate. It's so clever, and something I hadn't seen before. And I liked Aster as a character. She has her sullen moments, but so did I as a teen girl, and I didn't have to deal with half the issues she does. Aster's family is a character all their own, made up of a baking grandma, a mother obsessed with flowers, and a slew of sisters with all of their own problems. I found myself wanting to sit in that house and just let them exist around me.

Reese and his friends were another favorite for me. Knowing he's going to die soon gives Reese his darker moments, but also doesn't separate him from his humanity. When he begins to have feelings for Aster and learns what changing his fate will mean for her, the decision he is faced with is anyone's worst nightmare.

The pace of the book was unrelenting. I read it quickly, because I needed to know what happened next. And just when you think the stakes can't get higher, they do. I absolutely devoured the last few pages, only to be sad I was done.

Brenda Drake has created a unique concept with fun characters (and teens who drink, and swear, and even have sex! Yay, realistic teens!) and a fast pace. If you want a good read about fated love and whether it can or can't be changed, I highly recommend TOUCHING FATE.

it isn't exactly love at first sight

LIGHT SPOILERS!!!!!

During a tarot card reading, Aster touches a card and receives a shock from it. That shock creates an infinity mark on her wrist. And through that shock she "sees" her friend Leah's fate concerning two boys. She, her sister Daisy, and her friend Leah rush out to clean and bandage the wound.

Reese, a rich young man from Holland, is cursed. In his family, the first born son is due to die on his eighteenth birthday...which is three months away. When he first meets Aster, it isn't exactly love at first sight, but when he sees what happens when she touches the tarot card, he has a decision to make--try to get her to fall in love with him in order to change his fate, thus breaking her heart after he leaves the country, or leave her be and let fate take its course.

He chooses the first. After making a deal with the tarot card reader, Miri, to call on Aster and train her in her powers as a Fate Changer, he inserts himself into Aster's life.

The Characters: all of the characters were realistic for their age. Aster and Reece were wonderful narrators. I enjoyed Aster's family--from her gram to her younger sisters, parents, and their aunt.

The Plot: I really enjoyed the unique storyline of Aster being a Fate Changer, and Reese being a cursed first born son. It was refreshing to read something a little different. How Aster finds out what she is and what's in her bloodline was well done and very believable.

The Romance: I liked that Aster and Reese weren't instant soulmates, and that when Aster finally found out that Reece knew what she was and had originally set out to use her new gift to save himself and leave her, she let him have it. It made their love that much more believable.

Overall: I very much enjoyed the story! I recommend this book to those who like a touch of paranormal with their romance and those who like something different from the normal YA Paranormal.

The book is a fun read. I love the plot and the content justified it so much. I got hooked, read it the whole day at work and finished it at home. I wanted to know more about the history of the Fate Changers, Van Buren Families, and the Readers. What I read about the three kinds of people are just glances and brief information about them. I wanted to know more what’s inside the hat box, the content or story that each diary entry holds. If there won’t be a sequel about that I would fangirl all day long to have them in a novella or whatever you call it. Dedicated only to them.
