O, The Oprah Magazine's Top 10 Favorite Books of 2015.
Washington Post Best Science Fiction & Fantasy Books of 2015.

"Fascinating... A heart-piercing tale of love, desire and acceptance. Readers will be mesmerized by Dibbell’s staccato prose as much as they are by the harrowing circumstances this mother and child must endure."
—Washington Post

"Breathtaking. [Dibbell has] delivered a debut novel on par with some of the best speculative fiction of the past 30 years; The Only Ones deserves to be shelved alongside Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Nalo Hopkinson's Brown Girl in the Ring, and P. D. James' The Children of Men. It's that good, and that important, and that heartbreakingly beautiful."
—NPR

"A genre-bending work of punk-rock science fiction."
—Nylon

"Densely written but swiftly told, this first novel from rock critic Dibbell starts out as literary dystopia and ends up as a deft study of human identity, desperation, and longing."
—Library Journal

"A well-known rock critic, Dibbell infuses her debut novel with the stylistic grace of a seasoned writer."
—Time Out New York

"On the other side of Aldous Huxley's brave new world is Carola Dibbell's braver one, all the more unsettling (and maybe even more profound) for being not five hundred years from now but five minutes, in a time at once beyond our control and too immediate to escape. Brilliantly conceived, passionately defiant, deeply felt, The Only Ones introduces — in the form of central character Inez Fardo — one of the most memorable and compelling first-person voices in recent American fiction."
—Steve Erickson

"A bracing, tough minded, farsighted novel about bravery and endurance, motherhood and the way life goes on even after the world ends. Every sentence pierces."
—Kelly Link

Inez wanders a post-pandemic world, strangely immune to disease, making her living by volunteering as a test subject. She is hired to provide genetic material to a grief-stricken, affluent mother, who lost all four of her daughters within four short weeks. This experimental genetic work is policed by a hazy network of governmental ethics committees, and threatened by the Knights of Life, religious zealots who raze the rural farms where much of this experimentation is done.

When the mother backs out at the last minute, Inez is left responsible for the product, which in this case is a baby girl, Ani. Inez must protect Ani, who is a scientific breakthrough, keeping her alive, dodging authorities and religious fanatics, and trying to provide Ani with the childhood that Inez never had, which means a stable home and an education.

With a stylish voice influenced by years of music writing, The Only Ones is a time-old story, tender and iconic, about how much we love our children, however they come, as well as a sly commentary on class, politics, and the complexities of reproductive technology.

Carola Dibbell is a highly regarded rock critic whose fiction has appeared in the New Yorker, the Paris Review, Fence, and Black Clock. Writing about books as well as music, Dibbell was a Village Voice contributor for many years. The Only Ones is her debut novel.

Had a hard time finishing it which never usually happens with any book I read
By KiwiLA
Yes, I didn't enjoy this book whatsoever. I'm probably the only one who thinks this as it is getting fantastic reviews and the book clubs are trending with it. I bought it as I enjoy the post apocalyptic/pandemic genre. Unfortunately I found it dull to read, the first person hip hop vernacular was constantly grating, the characters weren't fleshed out enough and the setting simply empty. There was no descriptive prose so you didn't know what the characters or their worlds looked like, nor the things in it. Like reading the inside of an empty tin can - rounded but empty.

Not easy to read but worth it
By L. Jackson
This was not an easy book to read; as other reviewers have pointed out, the first person narrator is at times irritating and there is not a whole lot of description of settings etc. However, those are the things that made it interesting to me; I had to make it come to life myself and it did.

Wonderfully Written Narrator; A Fascinating and Enriching Read
By D. Olda
Despite the future dystopic world of The Only Ones, there is something deeply familiar about much in the book. To be sure, issues addressed in the The Only Ones are timely and poignant. However, it’s the voice of the narrator Inez (or simply I) that made such a strong connection with me.
The world of The Only Ones seems perpetually stricken with one pandemic after another. Queens, New York, where Inez lives, is as decimated by sickness as the efforts to wipe it out. Inez is an anomaly, seemingly immune to every disease she encounters. In an effort to make a living she is drawn into shady genetic experimentation. Through a series of events she is unexpectedly left with an infant, a clone of herself, and must raise her.
Author Carola Dibbell conveys the constant anxieties of parenthood, of being poor, of physical objectification and general physical angst through Inez with such clarity it is almost uncomfortably familiar at times. The book is a fascinating read for issues such as ethics in cloning and genetics. But its enriching in the way it addresses poverty, motherhood, and more.

Are We Not Men?: Masculine Anxiety and the Problem of African American Identity, by Phillip Brian Harper

In 1995, popular anxieties about black masculinity became evident in public reactions to the conclusion of the OJ Simpson trial and the Million Man March on Washington. The nation's divided response to the OJ verdict, together with the controversy surrounding Louis Farrakhan's call to black men to come together for a "day of atonement" brought issues of race and gender to the forefront of national debate.
In his timely and incisive book Are We Not Men?, Phillip Brian Harper explores issues of race and representation and shows that ideas about black masculinity have always played a troubled role both in the formation of African-American identity and in the mass media at large. What is at stake when a picture of OJ Simpson is darkened on the cover of Time magazine? Why is AIDS still seen as a white gay disease when a quarter of deaths from AIDS from 1981-1991 were among black males? Using examples from a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from sports and pop music to literature and television, Harper investigates these questions in an effort to show the ways in which narrow definitions of black manhood have failed to acknowledge real differences within the African-American community--to grave social and political effect. He examines recent phenomena, such as reactions to ABC anchorman Max Robinson's AIDS-related death and Magic Johnson's HIV status, as well as the homophobia and chauvinism of the Black Arts movement of the '60s and '70s, the construction of black "crossover" identity from Motown and Diana Ross to Run-DMC and MTV and the way that "street" authenticity is incorporated into Michael Jackson's choreography. He unravels the gender politics behind the "passing" novels of the Harlem Renaissance, scrutinizes black masculinity as seen through the eyes of the white protagonist of the 1961 autobiographical narrative Black Like Me and explores early representations of African Americans on television shows like "Julia" and "Room 222." Upholding the recent success of drag performer RuPaul, who demonstrates the limits of traditional notions of black masculinity by openly defying them, Harper suggests that popular culture is able to transcend its own representations and points to a future in which "black male" is no longer a homogenizing term.
An original, far-reaching and ultimately humane work of cultural criticism, Harper's book argues convincingly that there are no innocent texts, and forces us to reexamine the culture that surrounds us. Are We Not Men? will find a wide audience among those interested in American and African-American cultural studies, gender studies and gay/lesbian studies.

Review

"...a thoughtful and provocative meditation on the complex status of the African-American male in American society. This book is essential reading for those seeking to understand how race and gender can be bound together into an oppressive set of stereotypes."--Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

"Are We Not Men? is an important and sophisticated examination of black masculinity. Harper deftly demonstrates the heretofore rarely explored contradictions in vastly diverse representations of black manhood in American popular culture."--Tricia Rose, author of Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America

"This book rises head and shoulders above all the publications on the trendy subject of black masculinity. Phillip Brian Harper writes courageously and without rancor about the common homophobic ground in black high- and low-brow culture, and the common structure of discrimination in white 'serious museum' as well as popular culture."--Manthia Diawara, Professor of Comparative Literature and Film, Director, Africana Studies, NYU

"Phillip Brian Harper has an elegant sense of irony, a keen eye for contradiction, and a serious message to convey. These essays on masculinity, race, and homophobia are meticulous, witty, thoughtful, sobering, and absorbing. This is cultural criticism at its best."--Patricia J. Williams, Columbia University Law School

Doesn't read like a textbook
By Brent Royal-Gordon
My economics survey course is using this as a supplemental textbook, and I can say that without a doubt it's the most interesting nonfiction text I've ever been assigned.

The book basically consists of about thirty 4-8 page articles on various real-world topics, ranging from the obvious (rent controls, minimum wage) to the exotic (prostitution, global warming). In each case, the authors explain how you can apply economic principles to these issue at hand--and often come to a conclusion that would have surprised you before you read the article, but now seems as obvious as the color of the sky. A lot of the articles are U.S.-centric, but the authors draw on examples from other countries where appropriate.

Our teacher has been assigning a reading every week or so, but I often found myself continuing three or four articles past the assigned one because the topics were so interesting. If your teacher assigned this text, count yourself lucky; if you're looking for some independent reading, take a close look at this book.

Decent but Limited
By David Dodd
This is a must read for the layman who doesn't want to read Economics 101. Many politicians and well-intentioned citizens should realize what they're up against when they try to thwart the laws of economics, whether it's the minimum wage, ticket scalping, drugs or abortions. This book explains in clear terms why many laws to regulate these issues are doomed from the start. In addition, this book is a great companion for a macroeconomics course to promote class discussions. However, if you already fully understand the laws of supply and demand, then this book is little more than light reading on a plane, and probably not worth the price. Paul Krugman's, The Accidental Theorist, addresses many of the same issues, is a lot cheaper, and more fun to read.

A Fun, Excellent Exploration of Real-World Economics Issues
By A Customer
This is a great little book to use as a companion to a textbook in any intro to economics class. Accessible even to people with no econ background at all, it shows how the principles of economics can be useful to understand a variety of different issues. The readings are short and clear, and they cover real-world, current issues. I would also recommend this to any reader who wants to learn more about the practical applications of economics.

Unwelcome Strangers: American Identity and the Turn Against Immigration, by David M. Reimers

Is it time for America―a country founded and forged by immigrants―to shut its doors? After decades of liberal policies that welcomed ever greater numbers of immigrants, America is seeing a surge in anti-immigration sentiment. Congressional debates, polls, incidents of violence, and the growing strength of anti-immigration groups all indicate a growing nativism. In Unwelcome Strangers, David M. Reimers enters into the emotionally charged immigration debate, looking at all sides of the argument. Who are the nativists, and are any of their views legitimate? This balanced investigation traces the history of American attitudes toward immigration and offers a new perspective on the current crisis.

The core of this book uncovers the heated arguments of the anti-immigration forces, from environmental groups that warn against the consequences of overpopulation, to economic concerns that immigrants take jobs away from Americans, to assimilationist fears that newcomers―especially from Latin America, and Asia―threaten American culture. Reimers questions these arguments while acknowledging that pro-immigration forces hurt their position by not considering whether the United States can actually absorb one million immigrants a year. Reimers sees potential solutions in English language instruction for newcomers, greater accountability of sponsors, and government intervention to counterbalance the negative economic impact some immigrants have on poor communities. Reimers outlines the many bureaucratic and practical challenges faced by the INS, from determining who gets political asylum to screening applicants for criminal records.

Reimers charts the history of U.S. immigration policy and public reaction to newcomers, from the Puritan colonists to World War II refugees. The rise of nativism that began in the 1880s culminated with the highly restrictive immigration policies of the 1920s. Reimers shows how immigrant groups have historically been targeted―whether for ethnic, racial, or religious reasons. Quakers, Catholics, and Jews were the focus of anti-immigrant sentiment as were Germans, Irish, Italians, and Asians. This history of prejudice throws light on later developments in immigration history, such as the public response to the Cuban refugee crisis, the growing proportion of Third World immigrants, and the relationship between legal and illegal immigration, right up to the battles over California's proposition 187―which proposed to restrict public assistance for aliens and their children―and major congressional legislation passed in 1996 to deal with immigration.

Review

Reimers provides a useful survey of the current state of federal immigration law and enforcement policies as well as proposed changes in the existing regulations.

(Boston Book Review)

Review

Reimers makes a powerful case against the racist and xenophobic nature of American nativism over the past century.

(Donald M. MacRaild, University of Sunderland Immigrants and Minorities)

Reimers has undoubtedly lit the way for scholars and lay citizens alike to a more fruitful discussion of contemporary immigration and the newest American nativism.

(Matthew Frye Jacobson Reviews in American History)

No other volume as clearly and concisely sorts out the environmental, cultural, and economic arguments offered by contemporary anti-immigration minions. No other historical detective reveals how often nativists are linked by common sources of right-wing funding. Unwelcome Strangers is required reading for historians and current policymakers, alike.

(Alan M. Kraut, American University)

Reimers has written a definitive history of our latest anti-immigrant movement, which, he argues persuasively, was as racial and as xenophobic as all other nativist movements of the past, except that the proponents this time tried to hide their true feelings under their supposed concern for the environment and taxpayers' burden.

(Peter Kwong, Hunter College)

Reimers's judicious and balanced treatment in Unwelcome Strangers can only add to his reputation as our finest historian of recent and contemporary immigration.

(Roger Daniels, University of Cincinnati)

About the Author

David M. Reimers is professor of history at New York University and the author of many books, including Still the Golden Door: The Third World Comes to America, and (with Frederick Binder) All the Nations Under Heaven: An Ethnic and Racial History of New York, both published by Columbia.

This book is a great companion for the History of Americas class. It covers all the key points that my teachers discuss and has prepared me for all my exams. The book follows the course curriculum to the letter and it offers insights that may not be shared in class. I think all IB students should order books from this series if they are interested in getting the best grades possible and increasing their knowledge of the topics. I plan to ask my parents order the other course books for my other IB classes. Amazon Student Review, USA The Oxford IB course books are the best ever resource for both teachers and students. The first chapter, although containing some overall useful material, has way too many errors to be considered for use in my classroom. Jefferson was not a Democrat-- no scholars refer to him as that. John Jay had a huge role in the Federalist Papers, Haiti is on the west side of the island not the east-- and most importantly-- citizens in the northern states were not mostly against slavery. Not at all. People in Boston ran abolitionists out of town. The debate and fight continued well into the twentieth century.
