Grade 7 Up-- A succinct biography of the black novelist whose spirited use of dialect occasioned criticism from other prominent black writers, and who until recently was largely forgotten. Raised in Florida at the turn of the century , Hurston was indefatigable in her pursuit of self-improvement and an outlet for her acknowledged storytelling gift. Although it took many years, she put herself through Howard University, and then went on to Barnard for an advanced degree in anthropology. During these same years, her short stories made her an award-winning contributor to the literature of the Harlem Renaissance, from which she went on to write novels and compile collections of black folklore. Lyons is fond of her subject, and attempts to gild the lily--but Hurston, prickly as a cactus, refuses to gild. Her self-promotion, flamboyance, and inability to maintain stable relationships come through clearly. But so, thanks to the inclusion of generous passages from her various books, does her shining literary gift. While the cover does not grab, a 30-second booktalk using Hurston's traumatic family life or her experience with zombies in Haiti, a telling of one of her folktales, or a quick look at any of the excellent black-and-white photographs that grace the book will catch readers. Even on paper, whether it is in her words or her image, Hurston is a vibrant presence. Young adults who encounter her will come away enriched. Mary E. Lyons is the author of many books for children and young adults, including Roy Makes a Car, Feed the Children First, Dear Ellen Bee, Letters from a Slave Girl, and Sorrow's Kitchen. About the Author
Kim Chernin is a guest instructor at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, where she teaches a course in psychoanalytic models with Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer. She is the author of two books about eros and memory, Crossing the Border  and Sex and other Sacred Games  (with Renee Stendhal); a trilogy of books on hunger, The Obsession, The Hungry Self,  and Reinventing Eve;  a novel, The Flame Bearers;  a memoir, In My Mother's House;  a collection of poetry, The Hunger Song;  a book about psychoanalysis, A Different Kind of Listening;  and a spiritual memoir, In My Father's Garden.  She has studed music on her own since the age of seven, when she first began to play the piano.

A life-changing historical perspective of women's bodies

I read The Obsession back in 1980, when it first appeared. I was struggling with a severe eating disorder, and thought my problem had to do with will power and discipline. The Obsession was one of three books I read that year that literally turned my life around: the other two were Feeding the Hungry Heart, by Geneen Roth, and Fat is a Feminist Issue, by Susie Orbach. Each gave me a different, and crucial, perspective on my own struggles. Kim Chernin's book reminded me that the craze for skinniness is a very recent development in Western culture; that it has everything to do with the power dynamics of our society, and nothing to do with whether we're good or bad people based on our size; and that the most powerful female figures in history have been amply endowed, if not (by modern standards) downright fat. After reading this book, I felt like a warrior goddess for weeks. It helped me let go of a lot of self-hatred and confusion about my body. Kim Chernin is also an exquisite writer - there were passages that literally took my breath away. I give this book my highest recommendation for any woman struggling with her body image, or any reader wanting to understand women's minds at a deeper level.

The Obsession: a feel-good feminist study

This thoughtful, powerful, and well-researched study of women`s preoccupation with food and weight is one of the best feminist reads ever. I began the book with expectations of simply enjoying a valid cultural history of food and eating. Soon, however, I could`nt put it down, as I recognized myself and many of my friends and relatives in Chernin`s case histories and literary examples. She captures perfectly the feelings of guilt and low self-esteem that ensue when you don`t stick to a society-prescribed diet, even though that diet may be harming you physically and emotionally. She mentions at length the uneasiness felt by women who are miraculously happy with their bodies, because a culture and media obsessed with willowy, thin figures subtly pressure them to feel uneasy. The structure of the book is set up as a neat balance between real-life studies of anorexia and other weight disorders juxtaposed with cultural and literary views on women and their appetites and figures. The section on Margaret Atwood`s novel "The Edible Woman" and its treatment of the anorexic personality is just one instance where Chernin`s insights amaze you. At the book`s fascinating conclusion, I felt like cheering. It makes one feel proud to be a woman, no matter what size you wear or which body part you dislike. I`m not going to say that it turned my entire self-image around, but it definitely helped set me on a path of self- discovery and liking my physical body beter. That`s why I hope today`s young women will find and read it, too. Oh, and the poem comparing designer jeans to girdles is priceless!

Poignant and Revealing book

I read this book a while ago and was very moved and still am by its candidness. I found that it will resonate with anyone who has experienced an eating disorder, and it will enlighten someone who is naive to the hell that underlies such an eating disorder. After reading this remarkable volume, one cannot help but realise that eating disorders are not at all about food and that overcoming one involves much more than changing one's eating habits. The reader will realise that beating such a disorder is no easy feat. It can be the hardest task someone will ever complete.

Hadith being the second source of Islamic law, which is the sayings, actions, sanctions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has been incorrectly criticized in recent history for its authenticity. Science of Hadith provides a proper understanding of the different levels of Hadith, the different chains of narration, its authenticity, brief biography of the narrators of Hadith, who can narrate a Hadith or not, and the critics of Hadith. This is a book not only for Muslims, but for non-Muslims and for those who are at the college level or higher.

Amazing book

This book is an amazing book. It goes over the 2nd source of Sharia/Islamic Law (The words, actions, and sanctions of the Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). A good detailed explanation from a proper source. It is something that is needed and it could be used as a criteria between the propaganda and false information that the misinformed people spread about Islam and what Islam really is. The author, Qazi Fazlullah Saheb (Hafidhahullah), is a living gem. He has spent majority of his life studying and learning both Religious and Secular knowledge from proper sources. I recommend not only his written work but also his live classes as well. If you want to learn proper Islam from a proper source then buy his books and benefit from him as much as you can because it's not common knowledge being taught everywhere nowadays.

Sexy times

So, it's back to Hunter and Livy. I love these two. I like most of the secondary characters as well. And I have always had great love for an office romance, even if this one didn't start out in any sort of conventional way.

Hunter Carlisle has issues. We didn't really get into them in Yes, Please. In this chapter of Hunter and Livy's story, we get some insight into what the deal is with him. We've seen throughout the story so far, Livy trying to get in there. Being patient, while also not taking most of his guff. I love Livy. She's a strong character. Life has kind of beat her down a bit, but she never gives up. Hunter, he's kind of contradictory...for lack of a better word. Sometimes he's all business, take control. He's a big shot, running a large company, so you know he has to be smart and savvy. Then, when it comes to certain things in his life, I feel like he's allowing himself to be pushed around. For what? I'm not sure I completely understand yet. I'm sure it's coming, I just have to be patient. FYI, there is a bit more sexy times in Now, Please than there was in Yes, Please. There was one instance in this part of the story, where I felt that Livy should have made something a little less easy for Hunter, but you'll have to read it yourself and find out what I mean.

I can't wait to see what happens next. I'm hoping Hunter can finally be rid of the bad things he still allows to have part in his life. Maybe Livy can teach him a little something about that.

An Awesome Read!

I loved reading Now, Please (Please Series Book 2), all about Hunter Carlisle the gorgeous CEO & Olivia the twenty-two year old girl who now works for me & only signed one contract. Hunter took one look at Olivia and he knew he just had to have her, however she signed his employment contract but refused his personal contract and said no I don't want to work for you. Needless to say Hunter was stunned, so he changed the rule and said Olivia could work for him for one month and then they would revisit the two contracts after the month was up. The author wrote an incredible story, and the characters absolutely made the story come to life! In book one Olivia gets a one month shot at this admin position. In book two she's still working for Hunter and still only signed the employee contract, and they are flying by the seat of their pants over the personal issue! Read this series it will make you laugh, sigh, shake your head and cum up a storm! Read about Hunter & Olivia and fall in love with the both of them. Olivia is a normal run of the mill girl who loves her jeans & hoodies, and since meeting Hunter she has had to change her entire wardrobe! Follow these two and check out their adventures! I can't wait for book three!

I loved Yes, Please but Now, Please blew me away! There were so many unexpected twists and turns. I love the portrayal of the main character Livvy, and the way that she stuck to her roots in situations that she may have very easily changed just to fit in. I read this book in one day, because I couldn’t put it down. After reading the teaser for the third book, I think this series will be a huge hit for Summers!

Unsurpassed, but demanding

As I reviewed this book at Amazon, I found only one review, which I considered to be too harsh. You should understand that Helgason is writing a graduate textbook. Students will learn about "modules" in their graduate algebra course. They will learn De Rham's theorem in an introductory analysis course or sometimes even in a topology course (yes, it can happen). So, most of the language for which another reviewer criticized him would usually be covered in other graduate courses.

Helgason writes tersely but extremely precisely. I know of no other author who gives similar sophistication of point of view and quick, to the point, proofs. He is a "best of breed," and I suppose that is part of the reason he has been a core member of the faculty at M.I.T. for such a long time. A serious student cannot really avoid reading the entire progression of these texts, particularly the "Groups and Geometric Analysis" title, perhaps second in the Helgason manuscripts.

Helgason Differential Geometry

I'm not qualified to say much about this book, but I think it's excellent and thought it deserved a higher amazon rating. Besides being remarkably clear (much like the cold air of Helgason's home country of Iceland), I think it's a great, wonderful bridge between the original works in Lie theory and the more basic textbook treatments of DG and Lie theory out there (Warner, do Carmo, Lee, ...), many of which are quite good. It is filled with references and citations to original papers (some by the author) and is perhaps more connected to the historical genesis of the subject than other textbooks.

By providing content that is primarily an elementary, noncalculus, practical approach to the design and analysis of structural steel members, using numerous example problems and a step-by-step solution format, this text has remained true to its reader-friendly tradition. This edition, however, is a transitional text that bridges two methods of design that are currently being used: Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and Allowable Stress Design (ASD). Most engineering professionals agree that LRFD will become the dominant method in the future. However, since the traditional ASD method remains popular and practical and is still widely used, this text uses the traditional method while devoting entire chapters to the LRFD method.
